Practical guide

Salla, Zid or a custom-built store: which fits your business, and when to move

If you are starting to sell online, or you sell ordinary products in an ordinary way, start on a ready-made platform such as Salla or Zid. Both are Saudi subscription platforms that give you a working store within days, with payment and shipping connections and an app marketplace. They differ in the details, not the fundamentals, so try both dashboards and compare their current plans before you choose. A custom store becomes the right call when your selling logic no longer fits inside a platform: customer-specific wholesale pricing, stock across several warehouses tied to your own system, or a buying experience no theme can deliver. In the Saudi market a custom-coded store usually costs SAR 30,000 to 80,000. These are market ranges, not a quote.

What are you actually buying with each option?

A ready-made platform is a rental. You pay a subscription and get a store that works, and the platform takes care of servers, updates, security and the connections to payment gateways and couriers. In return you work within what the platform allows, and the store itself does not leave with you if you go. Only your data does.

A custom store is ownership. You pay a higher build cost once, then yearly hosting and maintenance, and you get code that is yours to change however you like. In return you are responsible for everything the platform used to do for you: the server, backups, security updates and keeping up with changes to payment and shipping APIs.

So the right question is not "which is better?" but "do the limits I am hitting now cost me more than owning and running my own store would?" For most new stores the answer is no. For some mature stores it is yes.

Salla or Zid: how to choose between them

There is no fixed answer, and anyone who tells you one is always better is simplifying. The two are close on the fundamentals: a ready Arabic store, connections to local payment gateways and couriers, an app marketplace and themes. The details that separate them, such as plans, fees and available apps, change from time to time, which is why we give no figures here that may go stale. Check each platform’s current pricing page.

The practical way: open a trial account on both, add five real products from your own range, then compare using this list.

  • Is there a theme that suits your kind of product without heavy changes?
  • Are the payment gateway and courier you want available and easy to switch on?
  • Are the features you need (product options, coupons, abandoned carts) in the plan you will pay for, or in a higher plan or a paid app?
  • What will you pay each month once the apps you really need are added, not the plan price alone?
  • Can you connect a domain you own, and export products, customers and orders whenever you want?
  • Which dashboard did your staff find easier? They are the ones who will use it every day.

When is a ready-made platform the right decision?

In most cases. If your products sell at a published price and ship in the usual way, a platform gives you in days what takes weeks to build, and it carries the whole technical operation for you. The money you save goes into photography, content and advertising, which are what make sales in the first year, not the kind of code underneath.

A platform also suits testing a new product or market before you invest in it, and anyone with nobody to look after the technical side. Building a custom store for a business that has not yet proven its sales is one of the most expensive mistakes: you spend tens of thousands to learn the problem was the product or the price.

When does a custom store make sense?

When the limits themselves are what cost you. The sign is not sales volume alone, since large stores run comfortably on platforms. It is the kind of thing you need. These are the clearest cases:

  • Selling to businesses: price lists per customer, minimum orders, quotes and approvals, payment on credit.
  • Products priced or configured from the customer’s choices with logic that ordinary product options cannot express.
  • Real-time integration with an ERP or with stock across several warehouses and branches.
  • A multi-vendor marketplace with its own commissions and settlements.
  • A buying experience that is itself your edge, such as subscriptions with custom rules or booking combined with purchase.
  • Your staff spend hours every week copying data by hand between the store and your systems.

The middle ground before building from scratch

There are steps between a ready theme and a fully coded store. The first is a theme designed for your brand on the platform itself, which fixes the look and the browsing experience and keeps you on the platform’s infrastructure. The second is connecting the platform to your systems through its API and apps, so the store stays where it is while orders and stock flow to your system automatically.

The third is a store on an open-source system such as WooCommerce, or on a global platform such as Shopify, with an adapted design. In the market this usually costs SAR 5,000 to 15,000. It gives you more freedom than the local platforms in exchange for more technical responsibility, and you need to confirm for yourself that the payment gateways and couriers you need are supported.

Try these steps in order. If a cheaper one solves your problem, there is no reason to move to the more expensive one.

How to move without losing customers or your Google ranking

Moving is a data migration project before it is a design project. Plan it before the build, and keep the old store running until the new one has been tested with real orders.

If you decide a custom store is the way, at Fortune Code we build it with a written scope and a delivery date we keep, the code and accounts stay in your name, and you get fast technical support after launch and a written quote within 24 hours. If we think the platform still serves you, we will say so.

  • Export products, categories, customers and orders from the platform and check the files are complete.
  • Customer passwords do not normally transfer, so prepare a message inviting customers to set a new one.
  • Write a permanent (301) redirect map from every old URL to its new equivalent, so you keep your ranking.
  • Make sure the domain is registered in your name and under your control before switch-over day.
  • Reconnect payment gateways and couriers and test a full order with every payment method.
  • Move tracking and advertising tags and confirm purchases are being recorded.
  • Pick a quiet time for the switch, away from seasons and promotions.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Salla or Zid?

There is no single answer for everyone. Both are Saudi platforms and they are close on the fundamentals. The differences are in themes, apps, plans and what each plan includes, and those details change. Open a trial on both, add real products, work out what you will pay each month once the apps you need are added, then pick the one your staff find easier and that suits your products.

When should I move from Salla or Zid to my own store?

When you need something neither the platform nor its apps can do: prices per wholesale customer, real-time links to stock in several warehouses, a product priced from the customer’s choices, or a multi-vendor marketplace. Sales volume alone is not reason enough; large stores run comfortably on platforms.

How much does a custom online store cost in Saudi Arabia?

In the Saudi market a custom-coded store usually costs SAR 30,000 to 80,000, a professional mid-sized store SAR 12,000 to 35,000, and enterprise or multi-vendor stores SAR 100,000 and up. Add hosting at SAR 500 to 3,000 a year, plus maintenance. These are market ranges, not a quote.

Will a custom store increase my sales?

Not automatically. Sales come from the product, the price, the photography, the advertising and delivery speed. A custom store raises sales only when what stops the customer buying is something in the store itself that you cannot change on the platform, such as how prices work or the steps of the order.

Will I lose my customers and orders if I move?

No, if the move is planned. Products, customers and orders are exported and imported into the new store. What normally does not transfer is customer passwords, so customers are asked to set a new one. Most important of all, old URLs must be permanently redirected to the new ones so you keep your Google ranking.

Can I connect Salla or Zid to my accounting system or ERP without moving?

In many cases, yes. Both platforms offer ready-made apps and APIs that pass orders and stock to other systems. Try this route first because it costs less than moving. If the available connection does not cover what you need, such as per-customer pricing or real-time stock in several warehouses, that is when a custom store makes sense.

What is the difference between a custom store and a WooCommerce or Shopify store?

WooCommerce is an open-source plugin that runs on WordPress and that you host yourself. Shopify is a global subscription platform. Both sit in the middle: more freedom than a ready theme, less responsibility than full custom code. A custom store has its code written for your business, so it suits logic that plugins do not cover, at a higher cost and timeline.

Do I own the domain and the data on a ready-made platform?

The domain is yours if you registered it in your own name and connected it to the store, so never leave it in a designer’s or agency’s name. You can export your product, customer and order data. The store software itself belongs to the platform, which is normal for any subscription service. Check the export options in your plan before you need them.
