Practical guide

WordPress or a custom-coded website: when a template is enough and when it is not

WordPress is the right decision for a site built on content: a company profile site, a blog, news, service pages that your own staff update. It is a widely used open-source content management system with plenty of themes and plugins, and people who work on it are easy to find. A custom-coded website becomes the better choice when the site is really an application: user accounts and permissions, booking and payment with your own rules, links to your internal systems, or many pages that must load very fast. In the Saudi market a profile site on a ready template costs SAR 2,000 to 7,000, a company site with a custom design SAR 5,000 to 25,000, and an advanced site with integrations SAR 20,000 to 50,000. These are market ranges, not a quote.

Three things that often get mixed up

A "WordPress site" may mean a ready theme with its colours and text changed in two days, or a design drawn for your company and then built as a WordPress theme from scratch. Both run on the same system, and there is a wide gap between them in quality and price.

"Custom code" means the site is written as a standalone application in a modern framework, with an admin panel built for it or a separate content management system. So in practice there are three options: a ready template, a custom design on WordPress, and custom code.

When you compare two quotes, first ask which of the three each one is talking about. Much disagreement over price comes from two quotes using the same name for two different products.

When is WordPress the right decision?

When your site is mainly content: about us, our services, our projects, articles, contact. WordPress was designed for this, many staff and marketers already know its dashboard, and its plugins cover most ordinary needs such as forms, multiple languages and search optimisation.

Its less mentioned advantage is that you are not tied to whoever built it. If you fall out with the designer you will find another easily, because the system is well known. That is real protection for a small business owner with no technical team.

And if your budget is limited, a light template with well-written content and real photos serves you better than custom code that eats the whole budget and leaves nothing for content.

Where WordPress struggles

WordPress itself is not the problem on most struggling sites; the way it is used is. A multipurpose theme carrying dozens of features you never use, with twenty plugins on top, each adding its files to every page. The result is a slow site that is hard to maintain.

Security is an ongoing responsibility. Core, the theme and every plugin need regular updates, and an abandoned plugin that its developer stopped updating is an open door. This is not a flaw unique to WordPress, since all software needs updating, but more parts mean more to keep track of.

It really does struggle when you ask it for what it was not designed to do: complex booking logic, multi-level permissions, real-time integration with an internal system. You can assemble that from plugins, but you are building an application on a foundation that was not laid for one, and every update becomes a gamble.

When is custom code worth its cost?

When the site stops being pages that are read and becomes something that is used. These are the signs:

  • The user signs in and does something: books, pays, tracks an order, uploads documents.
  • The site must exchange data with an ERP, CRM or stock system in real time.
  • You have your own logic for pricing, eligibility or approvals that no ready plugin covers.
  • Speed is a direct sales factor: hundreds of pages, ad campaigns and a conversion rate you measure.
  • Security or regulatory requirements rule out relying on plugins from many third parties.
  • You find yourself paying a developer to modify ready plugins more than you use them as they are.

Cost after launch

Both options need hosting, a domain and maintenance. In the market, hosting with an SSL certificate costs SAR 300 to 4,000 a year depending on the size of the site, and maintaining a small site SAR 1,000 to 5,000 a year. With WordPress, add licences for the theme and paid plugins, which renew every year.

The real difference is in the kind of maintenance. With WordPress it is frequent, small updates, and you should expect an update to clash with a plugin now and then. With custom code the updates are less frequent, but every change needs a developer who knows the code, so never accept a custom site without documentation and without the code and accounts in your name.

The common rule in the market is to set aside 15% to 20% of the build cost each year for maintenance and small improvements, whichever option you choose.

How to decide

Write down what a visitor must do on your site. If the answer is "read, then get in touch", WordPress or a good template is enough, and you should spend the difference on content, photography and search optimisation. If it is "sign up, book, pay and follow up", you are building an application, and custom code saves you a rebuild a year from now.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress suitable for a company website?

Yes, for most company profile sites. It is a widely used open-source content management system, and your staff can update pages and articles in it without a developer. It stops being suitable when you need user accounts, your own logic and deep integrations, which is the work of an application, not a content site.

Are WordPress sites easy to hack?

An updated WordPress on good hosting is secure. Sites that get hacked are usually neglected: an old version, a plugin that was not updated, or a weak password. Because it is so widely used it is targeted more than others, which is why regular updates and backups are not optional.

Is a custom-coded site faster than WordPress?

Usually yes, because each page carries only what it needs, without theme and plugin code. But WordPress with a light theme, few plugins and good hosting is fast too. Measure speed on mobile with Google’s free tools before you judge any quote.

How much does a WordPress site cost, and a custom one?

In the Saudi market a profile site on a ready template costs SAR 2,000 to 7,000, a professional company site with a custom design SAR 5,000 to 25,000, and an advanced site with integrations SAR 20,000 to 50,000. These are market ranges, not a quote, and they move with the number of pages, the languages and who writes the content.

Which is better for ranking on Google?

Google does not prefer one technology over another. What decides it is useful content, speed, page structure and links. Both options can rank. WordPress makes regular publishing easy; custom code gives finer control over speed and over the structure of thousands of pages.

Can I edit content myself on a custom-coded site?

Yes, if an admin panel is built for it or it is connected to a content management system, and that must be written in the quote. Ask before signing: what can I change myself? Text, images, new pages, articles? A custom site with no admin panel sends you back to the developer for every small change.

My WordPress site is slow. Should I rebuild it?

Not necessarily. Start with the cheapest fixes: better hosting, removing unused plugins, compressing images and replacing a heavy theme. If it is still slow after that, or the real problem is that you are asking it for what it was not designed to do, a rebuild makes sense.

What about drag-and-drop website builders?

They suit a page or a small site you want to launch yourself quickly with no developer. The constraint is that the site stays on the builder’s platform and subscription, and moving elsewhere means rebuilding it. For a temporary or simple site they are a reasonable choice; check the provider’s current pricing.
